Molas graduated in Law at the University of Barcelona (UB) and continued his academic career at the Department of Political Science and Public Law. He is a full member of the Philosophy and Social Sciences Section of the Institute of Catalan Studies. His speciality is the history of political parties, a subject on which he has written important works such as the Diccionari dels partits polítics a Catalunya (Enciclopèdia Catalana).

During the dictatorship, Molas was actively involved in the anti-Francoist movement. He helped found the Workers' Front of Catalonia and the Socialist Party of Catalonia, of which he would later become president. He was also a deputy and vice-president of the Parliament of Catalonia and a member of the Senate. Additionally, he was a judge and president of the Constitutional Court of Andorra.

The Creu de Sant Jordi is among the highest honours awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya. It was established in 1981 to recognise individuals and organisations ‘who have provided outstanding services to Catalonia.’ This year, around twenty individuals and ten organisations will be awarded.
