The UAB ranks first among generalist universities in Catalonia and Spain for Horizon 2020 funding
The UAB participated with 191 projects in the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, and received a total of 85.89 million euros in funding according to the EC Data Dashboard.

With regards to its global position in comparison to other research entities, the UAB ranks third among universities and sixth among research institutes in Spain. In Catalonia, it is the second university in terms of funding received from the European Union, after the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), making it the generalist university to receive the greatest amount of funding in both Catalonia and all of Spain.
The EU’s funding programme for research and innovation, Horizon 2020, ends with excellent results for the UAB. The university participated in the programme with a total of 191 projects, and received 85.89 million euros in funding. This is a substantial improvement with regards to the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme, its previous funding programme, in which the UAB received a total of 42.9 million euros in funding for a total of 160 projects.

By areas, the UAB stands out in funding for its environmental and resource efficiency projects, which received 7.22 million euros; food safety, sustainable farming and silviculture, and marine, maritime and continental waters research, with 4.18 million euros; as well as research into inclusive, innovative and reflexive societies, with a total of 3.36 million euros. The European Research Council (ERC) programmes also included funding for 33.35 million euros, and the Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions represented an additional 22.34 million euros for the UAB. In this last programme, the UAB ranks second in funding, only surpassed by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
The Horizon 2020 programme included a total budget of almost 77 billion euros for European Union member states, and was divided into different pillars. The UAB received 58.99 million euros under the Excellent Science pillar; 20.39 million euros under Societal Challenges; 3.82 million euros in Industrial Leadership; and 1.29 million euros in Science with and for Society. The UAB received an additional 594,587 euros for transversal projects; 422,923 euros in participation and dissemination of excellence; and 372,312 euros under the Euratom research and training programme.
