With the start of the new semester, the Fundació Autònoma de Barcelona (FAS) is opening 70 new volunteer positions in its social action programmes. We are looking for people interested in taking action and joining the teams of the socio-educational, socio-health or reception programmes to support children in their learning, accompany hospital patients or young people in search of refuge, among others.

Possibilities to volunteer at the UAB include the FAS social action volunteering programmes, which seek to engage the community to generate social change, equity and global justice. Those participating contribute their time and knowledge and are able to discover other realities, take action and, above all, reach personal and professional growth.

As Karolayne Diaz Veliz, one of last year's volunteers, explains: “direct interaction with people has enriched my understanding and empathy towards their realities, broadened my horizons and given me a richer perspective on the lives and needs of others. My volunteer experience has contributed to the development of skills such as intercultural communication, empathy and problem solving. These skills are crucial in my personal and professional growth.”

With the start of the new semester, new programmes are being offered. One of the programmes that currently has more places open is the CROMA 2.0, an initiative that links the UAB with primary schools of the Vallès Occidental region. Workshops are held for children living in vulnerable situations to promote their development and academic success. Students are needed, preferably from Terrassa and Rubí, who want to dsicover the reality of schools and want to be part of an innovative socio-educational project.

The Social Health programme will start its activity in the coming weeks. Volunteers are specifically sought for the Vall d'Hebron Hospital, where children and young people and their families are accompanied through games, a toys library, etc. and in the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Pant Pau, where patients are accompanied through activities such as reading clubs or board games in order to make their stay more pleasant and improve their mental and emotional health.

The Welcome Refugee programme also needs people to provide mentoring and social and linguistic accompaniment to young people in a refugee situation through meetings. The programme provides training in interculturalism, anti-racism and human rights, while acquiring knowledge about migration, forced displacement and the functioning of the asylum system in Spain.

Finally, the Entre Joves mentoring programme seeks volunteers to promote inclusion and work with young migrants living here on their own, providing social accompaniment, group activities and awareness-raising activities related to this issue, thus promoting a fairer and more egalitarian society.

How to become a volunteer?

Anyone who is part of the community, who has at least one morning or afternoon available during the week and above all a desire to learn, to contribute to social transformation and to meet people can participate in one of the programmes.

To carry out their tasks, volunteers receive training organised by the FAS volunteer area, as well as follow-up and accompaniment sessions. In addition, participating in a volunteer programme can earn students academic credits.
