Journalist Ana Blanco receives the Ítaca Award in the 13th edition of Travels, Communication and Adventure
On 25 November, the UAB Faculty of Communication Studies awarded journalist Ana Blanco the 2024 Ítaca Award in recognition for her extensive professional career and commitment to “journalistic integrity and rigour”.
Ana Blanco was thankful for the award and gave credit to teamwork: “This award is not only mine, it belongs to all of us because we have traveled this road together”. She shared with the audience her reflections on the work in the sector. "Journalists", she said, "must defend words, maintain rigour and incorporate new technologies without having them devour journalism". Regarding her way of working, she stated that, for her, “it is important to think about how to get things across to others” and, at the same time, she stressed the importance of closeness: “I do not want to detach myself from the viewers, I want them to accept me as their equal”.
The award was given to her “for her defence of human dignity, equality and diversity”. Blanco, who retired this year after 33 years at the helm of numerous news programmes at RTVE, received the award at the 13th edition of the annual Travels, Communication and Adventure conference, a space for reflection organised by the Communication and Education Office of the Department of Journalism and Communication Studies of the UAB.
Under the title “Narrating Pain and Facing Life”, the event brought together a selection of renowned journalists and chroniclers, who addressed the narrative and human challenges of dealing with such sensitive issues as suffering and adversity, from both a professional and personal perspective. In other editions of this conference, the Ítaca Award went to figures such as Martín Caparrós, Pepa Roma, Rosa María Calaf, Jordi Évole, Sebastião Salgado and Iñaki Gabilondo.
