From 8 February to 20 March, the UAB Exhibition Hall will be displaying the photographic exhibition “Aamelat souriyat. Syrian jewellers, women and girls sheltered in the Bekaa Valley”, by photographer Eva Parey.

The exhibition, which received a European DevReporter grant in 2019, is the result of four visits by the author to an informal settlement near the border, where she lived with the people featured in her images. The exhibition documents the conditions of labour exploitation and violation of rights suffered by women and girls who have fled the civil war in Syria and who live in informal settlements in Lebanon.

The photographs, taken between 2018 and 2019, reflect the reality of the working days in the countryside for Lebanese landowners, in long days and with low salaries, and which at the same time have to face the difficulties of life in the refugee camps, where basic services and legal protection are lacking. The project also aims to make visible the resilience and dignity of these women and girls, who despite their adversities, maintain their identity and their desire to live.

“Aamelat souriyat” has visited various cultural spaces in Catalonia and is part of the documentary “Aamelat. Jornaleres de la guerra”. It can be visited for free from Monday to Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the UAB Exhibitions Hall, located in the lobby of the Communications Library and General Newspaper Archive, in the Plaça Cívica.
