The European Master in Demography is a training program for the initiation to the academic study of human populations. The teachers come from the main European Research Institutes in Demography as well as Universities located in Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Together they created the European Doctoral School of Demography whose main task is the organization of this program.
The curriculum content is broad, balancing both demographic culture and methodology. Some background in mathematics, statistics and computing is required. The curriculum is divided into three parts, five core courses, a research seminar and the preparation by each student of a Master thesis. The five core courses are given in the period from mid-October to the end of June. These courses focus on causes and consequences of demographic change, population data, statistical and mathematical demography, as well as modelling, simulation and forecasting. The research seminar runs together with the core courses from mid-October to the end of June. All courses are held in English.

Specific skills
The general skills that students will acquire with the program are:
- Ability to develop knowledge and critical understanding of key areas within the fields of demography. This includes being able to understand and apply relevant theories and models by analyzing both the theoretical framework and addressing empirical challenges.
- Achieving a solid understanding of using different research methods, including data collection and analysis techniques, so that they can function appropriately in demographic research but also make decisions in the private sector or public institutions.
- Developing the skills required of academic researchers within the field of demography. The theoretical and practical experiences of the EDSD enable students to ask questions ranging from handling biographical events (survival analysis) to stochastic projections, from family dynamics to survival at advanced ages, or from biodemography to public policies.
Transferable skills
More specifically, the program aims to enable the student to:
- Communicate well through written reports as well as through oral communication.
- Apply an academic approach to the problems posed, including the use of relevant literature as well as high-quality data.
- Work effectively in groups of individuals with different backgrounds and origins.
- Handle a high workload effectively, prioritizing learning and research activities.
