Brief Curriculum Vitae
Javier Lafuente is University Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He graduated in Chemical Sciences, specialising in Technical Chemistry, in 1982, and obtained a PhD in Chemical Engineering with cum laude in 1988. He has carried out research stays at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California and the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Dr Lafuente is director of the BIO-GLS Technology Centre for the Comprehensive Treatment of Gaseous Emissions, Liquid Effluents and Solid Waste, which forms part of the TECNIO network, and is head of the consolidated research group for the Biological Treatment of Liquid and Gaseous Effluents and the Elimination of Nutrients, Odours and Volatile Organic Compounds (GENOCOV). The research group he heads has specialised in the development of biological treatment systems for liquid, solid and gaseous effluents.
Dr Lafuente is the author of 141 publications in indexed journals with over 3,500 citations and an h- index of 35. He has directed most of the more than 60 national and European research projects with companies in which he has participated. He has supervised 12 doctoral theses and numerous end-of-degree projects. He has also created two environmental spin-off companies for the application of cutting-edge technologies in the treatment of effluents.
Dr Lafuente has been director of the Department of Chemical Engineering (2004-2010) and Vice-Rector of Innovation and Strategic Projects (from 2016 to 2020). He has also been coordinator of the degree in Chemical Engineering and Rector’s Delegate at the Polytechnic University School of the Environment (EUPMA) in Mollet del Vallés. He has also been a member of the Economy and Organisation and International Relations committees on the UAB Governing Council. He is a member of various teaching-staff and research-project assessment committees.
Dr Esther Zapater Duque

Brief Curriculum Vitae
Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Law and Legal History Studies at the UAB. Since 1992 she has taught in the faculties of Political Science, Law and Economics and Business. She is currently director of the ERJAIDI (SGR) research group on the study of the European Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, director of the Institute of Law and Technology (IDT-UAB), co-director of the CICAC-UAB Chair of the Social and Economic Observatory of Justice and a member of the Women and Rights group at the UAB Faculty of Law.
In terms of research activity, she has worked on issues of energy policy and the EU's foreign action; in recent years, she has focused on immigration policy, on the trafficking of goods and human beings and on issues of gender, law and technology. She has published in these areas as well as directing doctoral theses. She has also participated in regional, national and European projects, four of which are within the framework of the H2020.
Dr Zapater has also participated in research projects at the European University Institute in Florence, the International University Institute in Luxembourg and the University of Bologna and has taught as a visiting professor at several European universities (Panthéon-Assas University, Moscow State Law Academy, Toulouse 1 University Capitole, University of Stirling).
She has been Vice-Dean for Students and International Relations and Dean of the Faculty of Law, and an elected member of the University Senate and the Student and International-Relations Committees on the Governing Council.

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Basic, Evolutionary and Education Psychology. She has taught on Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Speech Therapy and on the Master’s degree in General health Psychology. She formed part of the Final Degree Project Development Committee at the Faculty of Psychology and has been the coordinator for Final Degree Projects in Psychology since 2015.
She is a member of the Stress and Health Research Group, and has formed part of the coordinating team for the PhD in Health and Sports Psychology. Her own line of research is focused on stress management and its relation to psychological wellbeing in areas such as nursing, the communication of bad news and everyday stress management. She has had some twenty indexed journal publications and is a member of the Stress and Health Unit of the Psychology and Speech Therapy Service at the Faculty, where she has carried out knowledge transfer projects.
She was Vice Dean of Academic Affairs and Quality at the Faculty from 2016 to 2019 and Dean of Faculty from 2019-2022.

Professor in the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology of the UAB. She has taught in the faculties of Biosciences, Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Education, on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as individual courses in other campus centres. She has also taught on Master’s degree and PhD courses in the Universities of Alicante and Sassari, and Tor Vergata University Rome, and has been an Erasmus professor in different universities. Her teaching and research are focused on physical anthropology and specifically in relation to the study of human remains, whether in the field of human evolution, ancient remains of forensic anthropology.
As leader of the Osteobiography Research Group (GROB), she has brough together a multidisciplinary team in the field of reconstructing the life of ancient populations, from osteology to genetic analysis of ancient remains, working on identification, population origin, paleopathology, palaeolithic diet, etc. She has been responsible for national and international projects such as the study of frozen tombs in Mongolia. She has also led projects of great importance for Catalonia such as studies of the remains in the royal tombs of Santes Creus, a pilot project and protocol for the excavation of mass burials grounds from the Civil War in Catalonia.
Her university management roles have included Secretary of the Biology Section (licentiate degree in Biology), coordinator of the Professional Specialization Master’s Degree in Human Biology, coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Human Biology and later coordinator of the Interuniversity Master’s Degree in Biological Anthropology, coordinator of the PhD in Biological Anthropology and coordinator at the UAB of the Interuniversity PhD in Biodiversity. She has been the director of the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology, Deputy Dean of Academic Planning at the Faculty of Sciences, Rector’s Delegate for Academic Staff and Trainee Research Staff, and Rector’s Delegate for Scientific Policy.

Professor of the Department of Chemistry within the Area of Organic Chemistry, PhD in Chemistry from the UAB, Professor Sebastián carried out a postdoctoral stay at the Laboratoire de Chimie de Coordination (CNRS, Strasbourg) and later returned to the UAB through a Generalitat de Catalunya contract aimed at reincorporating PhD holders into Catalan universities. She was then awarded a position through the Ramon y Cajal Programme in 2001. Since January 2006 she has held a permanent post at the UAB.
Her research has evolved from the synthetic study of small molecules through to macromolecules, on to the preparation of polymeric materials, and has given rise to over 73 indexed scientific articles and three patents. She has participated in 12 national and European projects and six scientific networks. She currently coordinates a consolidated funded research group. She has supervised nine doctoral theses and is currently supervising seven theses that are now being written. In terms of knowledge transfer, she has taken part in four competitive projects and 15 contracts with companies, resulting in over twelve patents currently in use, two industrial doctorates and a National Research Prize in Public-Private Partnership between the UAB and Henkel KGaA & Co. She has also taken part in three teaching innovation projects that have given rise to nine articles.
She has been head of the Organic Chemistry Unit, secretary of the Department of Chemistry, member of the standing committees of the Faculty of Sciences and the Section of Chemistry, and member of the Department of Chemistry’s PhD Committee.

Carme Nogués is a Full Professor in Cell Biology at the Faculty of Biosciences of the UAB and member of the consolidated research group of the Cell Biology Unit. She has undertaken research stays at the Catholic University of Leuven, in Belgium, and at A&M University, Texas, USA.
She has headed the Cell Biology Unit on several occasions, and has been Head of Academic Planning (1987-1990), Financial Affairs Coordinator (1996-2002) and Secretary of the Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology (2000-2004 and 2006).
She has taken part in twenty national and international research projects, six of which as principal researcher. Her research focuses on the development of different cell culture systems (static, dynamic, three-dimensional, etc.) for studying new materials and devices of interest in biomedicine. She has published over 90 indexed articles based on this research activity.

Professor of Zoology in the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology at the UAB and head of the consolidated research group Aquatic Animals Health (AAH). She has been coordinator of the master's degree in Aquaculture (2006-2016), coordinator of the Doctorate in Aquaculture (2005-2016), vice-coordinator of the degree in Environmental Biology (2011-2013) and vice-coordinator of the master's degree in Terrestrial Ecology and Biodiversity Management (2008-2013).
Dr Carrassón has participated in more than thirty national and international research projects in the field of marine biology, in ten of which as the principal investigator. Her research has been directed to the biology and trophic and reproductive ecology of fish, and has, in recent years, focused on applied aspects of fish health as indicators of environmental quality. As a result of this activity, she has published over 60 indexed articles. She has been an evaluator of projects for ANEP, the State Research Agency and the AGAUR. She has been the scientific director of the Fish Diseases Diagnosis Service (SDPP) since 2009, where she has been responsible for contracts for the transfer and provision of services to more than 80 companies in the aquaculture and fisheries sector and administrations.
She has undertaken stays at the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology of the School of Molecular and Microbial Sciences (University of Queensland), at the Institute of Parasitology Biology Centre CAS (Czech Academy of Sciences), at the Torre de la Sal Institute of Aquaculture (CSIC) and the Institute of Marine Sciences (CSIC).

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Translation and Interpretation and East Asian Studies, Dr Galán has undertaken postdoctoral stays in Ireland (University College Cork, National University of Ireland, Galway; in the United Kingdom (University College London, Imperial College London) and in Brazil (Federal University of Santa Catarina and Federal University of Goiás).
She has focused her research on the didactics of translation and has researched into the acquisition of translation competence, teaching and learning methodologies, evaluation, transversal and entrepreneurial skills and attention to people with specific educational needs. She has participated in nine national and international research projects, an academic network and ten teaching-innovation projects. She is the author of 63 publications, 39 of which are in indexed journals.
Dr Galán is coordinator of the Entrepreneurship Committee in the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting and has been Vice-Dean for Professionalization and coordinator of the Enterprise project in the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting. Within the faculty, she was also responsible for staff and students with disabilities.

Senior Lecturer at the Department of Translation and Interpreting and East Asian Studies. Her teaching in the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting includes English to Catalan Translation on the Bachelor’s degree and Audiovisual Translation and Interculturality on the Master’s Degree in Translation and Intercultural Studies.
She was Dean of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting from 2011 to 2106. Her management roles have included Coordinator the Master’s Degree in Translation and Intercultural Studies and Academic Secretary of the former University School of Translation and Interpreting of the UAB. She has also been the Research Coordinator and Academic Secretary of the Department of Translation and Interpreting and East Asian Studies.
Her research interests are translation, audiovisual translation, intercultural studies and language in the media.
From 1992 to 2014 she formed part of the UAB Language and Media research group, which from 2005 has been a recognised research group, and she is currently a member of the Communication and Culture consolidated research group. She is also a member of the research group in Intercultural Studies and Translation of the Department of Translation and Interpreting and East Asian Studies.
She has spent several research periods at the State University of New York at Binghampton, the University of Limerick and the University of Heidelberg, and has participated in Erasmus mobility programmes.

Senior Lecturer in Audiovisual Communication and Advertising at the UAB Faculty of Communication Studies, Dr Luzón has supervised 11 doctoral theses and has participated in six Spanish and European projects in the fields of communication and social sciences and, particularly, in research into gender. She is a project evaluator for ANEP and has been an external evaluator for studies at Cardiff University, Wales. She has been a guest lecturer at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukraine, and at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. Her research is focused on the media, centring on aspects such as information, gender, youth and discourse in film and comics, on which she has produced a number of academic articles and books. In addition, she is a reviewer for specialist journals in her areas of expertise.
Dr Luzón has been Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Communication Studies (2010-2015), Assistant Director of the Department of Audiovisual Communication (2006-2009), elected member of the Board of Teaching and Research Staff (2005-2009) and Vice-Rector for Communication and Promotion (2016-2020). She was coordinator of the Image examinations for the PAU University-Entrance Exams (2006-2009) and has been coordinator of the Audiovisual-Culture examinations for the PAU University-Entrance Exams (since 2010). Professor in the Department of Applied Economics, Dr Ramos began teaching and research at the UAB at the end of the 1990s, after doing his doctorate at the University of Essex (United Kingdom).
His research attempts to better understand the origins and consequences of social inequality and poverty. His most recent projects study the inequality of opportunity and the intergenerational transmission of social advantage. This has led to the publication of approximately 40 academic articles (with an h-index of 20) and to participation in a range of projects funded by research agencies in several countries. He has directed 12 doctoral theses. Dr Ramos actively shares the conclusions and insight from his field of study with organisations and institutions that fight social inequality.
In the ambit of administration, Dr Ramos was director of postgraduate studies in Applied Economics for over a decade and was Vice-Dean of Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Economics and Business between 2012 and 2015. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Department of Applied Economics between 1998 and 2011.

Xavier Gabarrell is a full professor in the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering of the UAB and is the scientific coordinator of the ECIU University Research Institute for SMART European Regions, a member of the Board of Rezero (Catalan Foundation for the Prevention of Waste and for Responsible Consumption), former member of the Management Board of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) (2022-2023) and former Director of the Institute for Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA-UAB) (2018-2022).
He currently directs the Sostenipra industrial ecology group and the Fertilecity project. He is an expert in LCA, MFA, industrial ecology and waste management. Twenty-nine researchers have completed and successfully defended their PhD theses under his supervision. He is involved in international and national research projects, often as coordinator. During the period 2012-2022 he worked on 16 European projects and a number of Spanish projects. As well as several book chapters he has authored more than 200 publications in international indexed journals, with more than 7,600 citations and an h-index of 48 (Scopus). He is included in Reuter’s list of scientists with the greatest impact on climate in the world. His articles have been cited, for example, in different reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and has authored a Briefing Paper for the Implementation of the Ecodesign Directive via work plans, based on an analysis of selected product groups (EPRS/EVAL/SER/17/023), commissioned by the European Parliament (2017).
He is a founding partner of the spin-off Inèdit Innovació SL (2009), specialising in ecodesign and LCA as well as the more recent start-up Tectum Garden (2020), focussed on urban agriculture.
Xavier Gabarrell is one of the six guarantors of the ICTA María de Maeztu 2015 (MDM-2015-0552) and 2020 (CEX2019-000940-M) unit of excellence, accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Finance and Competitivity.
He has acted as academic secretary for the School for Doctoral Studies of the UAB and was the first director of the ICTA (2003-2006). Before that he was coordinator of the joint UAB-European Master’s degree programme in Environmental Studies (JEMES) Erasmus Mundus (2007-2010), coordinator of the Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering (2010-2013) and member of the Standing Committee of the Conference of Chemical Engineering Directors and Deans (CODDIQ) from 2012 to 2014.

Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Genetics and Microbiology. He is the author of over 200 publications in journals indexed in Journal Citation Reports with more than 7,800 citations, an h index of 49 and an i10 index of 144. He has supervised more than 35 doctoral theses and has taken part in 27 national and international projects, 21 of which as principal investigator.
He has been coordinator of the licentiate degree in Biology, director of the Department of Genetics and Microbiology, general coordinator of the graduate studies at the UAB, dean of the Faculty of Biosciences and Vice-rector of Teaching Staff. He has also been a member of the committees of the Governing Council for Finance and Organisation, Academic Staff and Academic Affairs. Jaume Tintoré graduated from the University of Barcelona in 1985, with a degree in Education (specialising in Psychology). He has taken the General Management Program and the Human Resources Management Program at IESE Business School, and the General Function Program at ESADE.
From 2004 to 2016, he occupied different executive positions at Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), in particular the following: Director General (2014-2016), Director General of Barcelona Transport and Leisure Transport (2011-2014), and Deputy Director General of Corporate Services and Human Resources (2006-2011).
From 2000 to 2004, he was Secretary General of the Catalonia Audiovisual Council. Previously, he held several positions of responsibility in the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat): Deputy Director General for Union Relations, at the Civil Service Directorate General (1996-2000), Head of Union Relations Services (1994-1996), and specialist advisor to the Directorate General of Prison Services and Rehabilitation (1991-1994).

Degree (1978) and PhD in Medicine and Surgery (1985) awarded by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Dr Armengol has been Full Professor of Surgery since 1995, a position that is institutionally linked to that of Head of the General and Digestive Surgery Service at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital.
He has been dean of the Faculty of Medicine (2012-2017), coordinator of the Teaching Unit at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (2008-2012), director of the Department of Surgery (2000-2008), assistant coordinator and coordinator of the Degree in Medicine (1996-2000), and vice-dean and coordinator of the Erasmus Programme for the Faculty of Medicine (1991-1996).
His research is centred on general and digestive surgery and, most particularly, on abdominal wall surgery (biomaterials, wound healing and the extracellular matrix), colorectal cancer, endocrine surgery (thyroid cancer) and morbid obesity. Coordinator of the General Surgery Research Group (AGAUR 2014 SGR 1075 SRCG-VHIR), Dr Armengol has participated in over 20 competitive research projects at Spanish and European levels, in many of these as Principal Investigator. He has supervised 66 doctoral theses, and is the author of 172 indexed publications and over 100 chapters in books and specialist monographic studies.
In the ambits of healthcare and hospital administration, he was resident physician (MIR) for General and Digestive Surgery at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (1979-1982), adjunct physician (1983-1992) and head of section (1992-1993) with the General and Digestive Surgery Service at the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital, where he was head of on-call physicians (1984-1993). He was head of section (1993) and (from 1994) has been head of service with the General and Digestive Surgery Service at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, where he was also the coordinating physician for General Surgery (1998-2015) and Healthcare Sub-director with the Area of Surgical Specialisations, General Area, and sub-director of Surgical Processes (2000-2015).
From 2011-2012, Dr Armengol was president of the Special Committee for Health Sciences at AQU (the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency) and has been evaluator for AGAUR (the Catalan Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants), FIS (Health Research Funding) and ANECA-ACADEMIA (the university-teaching curricular evaluation and accreditation programme of the Spanish Quality-Assurance and Accreditation Agency). He is Corresponding Academician of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia (2013).

Francisca Blánquez Cano is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). She graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1999 and earned her PhD in Biotechnology in 2005. She has taught first as an assistant lecturer and, from 2013 as senior lecturer mainly on Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Science degrees. She was Coordinator for the Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering at the School of Engineering of the UAB from 2013 to 2019 and has been Deputy Director of Academic Action at the School of Engineering from 2019 to the present.
She is a member of the BioremUAB research group which deals with the biodegradation of water and land-borne industrial pollution and the valorisation of waste. She is a specialist in the field of environmental engineering. her research output has resulted in the publication of 54 articles in international journals with an H-index of 26.

Antonio Espinosa is a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He graduated in Computer Engineering in 1994 and obtained his PhD in Computer Science in 2000.
He is a member of the High Performance Computation for Science and Engineering research group (HPCA4SE), for which he has directed several research projects related to the use of high performance computing systems applied to different social challenges involving the management of large volumes of data.
He has authored 73 publications in indexed journals with more than 1,000 citations and an h-index of 16, and has also directed national and European research projects and projects with businesses he has worked with. He has supervised six PhD theses and numerous final degree projects in the area of engineering.
He was Deputy Director of Promotion and Relations with External Entities of the School of Engineering between 2017 and 2022. He has been a member of the coordinating teams for different teaching innovation projects.

Professor of Physiology in the Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology of the Faculty of Biosciences of the UAB and member of the consolidated preclinical and translational research group in neuro-immuno-gastroenterology (NeuroGast). He holds a Licentiate degree in Veterinary Medicine and a PhD in Veterinary Medicine from the UAB.
Since he joined the UAB as a lecturer in 2009, he has coordinated the Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences (2011-2020), been a member of the Board of Director of the Institute of Neurosciences (2012-2016), Head of the Animal Physiology Unit on many occasions and has been a member of many of the committees at both the Faculty of Biosciences and the UAB. He is currently a member of the Research Ethics Committee (CERec).
His research and professional career has been linked both the academic field (University of California at Los Angeles and UAB) and the pharmaceutical industry (Novartis and AstraZeneca). He has participated in several national and international research projects as well as transfer projects with the pharmaceutical industry. His research is centred on the area of immunoneurogastroenterology, with a special interest in inflammatory and sensory processes (pain) of intestinal origin and their relation to microbiota. As a result of this activity, he has published more than 100 indexed articles.

Senior Lecturer in the area of Teaching and Schools Organisation of the Department of Applied Pedagogy of the UAB.
He holds a degree in Pedagogy and PhD in Educational Quality and Innovation Processes (awarded the special PhD prize). He is a member of CRiEDO, the Centre for Research and Studies for Organisational Development of the UAB as well as CRIE, the Curriculum, Resources and Educational Institutional Research Group of the University of Valencia.
His teaching on Bachelor’s degrees and postgraduate courses centres on the organisation and management of socio-educational institutions. His lines of research are: development of socio-educational institutions, educational participation and learning, inclusion and educational innovation. Throughout his academic career he has participated in more than 35 research and innovation projects and is the author of more than 200 publications.
He has also been a lecturer in the Department of Teaching and Schools Organisation of the University of Valencia and visiting lecturer at the Complutense University in Madrid and the Paris-Sorbonne University in France.

Senior lecturer in Audiovisual Communication and Advertsising at the Faculty of Communication of the UAB.
Her recent research activity has focused on three aspects: public participation in new media; sport, the Olympic movement and gender; and the interaction of adolescents in audiovisual media. In these areas she has supervised several doctoral theses and has published many articles and book chapters both nationally and internationally.
She has taken part in several research projects in national calls for projects and has formed part of consolidated research groups. She is currently a member of the UAB Sports Research Institute. She has also formed part of different committees for reforming syllabuses and is a reviewer for specialist communication journals.
In the area of university management she has been director of the Department of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising (2018-2021) and deputy director of teaching staff and secretary of the same department (2012-2018). Since 2016 she has been responsible for the Audiovisual Culture subject in the university entrance exams.
