Autism Spectrum Talk Draws Over 30 Attendees at UAB
The session kicked off with an overview of autism, led by Carla Parramon from the Autism Spectrum - Asperger Catalunya Association. Parramon covered the diagnosis process, the rising prevalence of autism due to improved diagnostic tools, and the strengths associated with the condition. "Many people receive a diagnosis in adulthood because it wasn't detected earlier. So, it's not true that it can only be diagnosed in childhood," she explained. The discussion also highlighted that symptoms vary widely among individuals. Several attendees shared their personal experiences of being diagnosed with and living with autism.
Psychologist Núria Pueyo then delved into the social aspects of autism, addressing topics like Theory of Mind and the general characteristics of social skills within the spectrum. The conversation also focused on strategies to facilitate the inclusion of autistic individuals.
The conference included a segment where attendees watched clips from various TV series and films, using these to reflect on how autism is portrayed in the media.
Lastly, the event showcased the Meet Up Inclusion workshop, a space designed for sharing experiences, resolving doubts, and developing strategies to support university students on the spectrum. Two students who participated in Meet Up shared their positive experiences, describing the programme as “very useful and interesting.”
