UAB Celebrates International Dance Day with a wide variety of Performances
Next Monday, May 5th at 1:30 PM in Plaça Cívica, three dance performances will take place to celebrate the day. The UAB Dance Classroom will present two shows performed by students from Contemporary Dance Level 1 and Level 2. In addition, the guest company Àngel Duran Performing Arts will perform the piece Clinch.

International Dance Day is an event celebrated every year at UAB. This academic year, special importance is once again being given to one of the most cherished branches of the performing arts. For this reason, three performances will be held in Plaça Cívica.
To start, the students of Contemporary Dance Level 1, under the direction of Mario G. Sáez, will perform the piece they have been working on over the past few months. Anem is a performance based on moving forward despite difficulties, continuing in the face of challenges, and doing so through dance. Anem seeks to move ahead “by creating a new way to communicate,” letting imagination “capture” the audience’s gaze.
Next, it will be the turn of the students from the Contemporary Dance Level 2 workshop, who have collectively created the piece Ten to Ten. Directed by Lai Santanach, this performance creates a space with ten personalities, ten viewpoints, beginning a journey that ends at the same starting point but from a new perspective. As Santanach explains: “In many traditions, the number ten is sacred, symbolizing the perfection of the manifested universe and the culmination of a journey. Ten holds many meanings, including perfection, goal fulfillment, transformation, the end of one cycle, and the beginning of a new one.”
To close the celebration of this special day, the Àngel Duran Performing Arts company will present a site-specific adaptation of their piece Cowards. The guest company will perform Clinch, a show inspired by boxing. Clinch refers to the moment when two fighters hold each other until the referee separates them, and this moment serves as the basis for the piece. Clinch seeks to expose the most toxic masculinity, represented in competition, denial, and “confrontation with everything that is different,” Duran explains. It also highlights rage or anger, commonly expressed in this type of sport. This piece will be performed by Duran himself and Yeinner Chicas. This performance will conclude the shows commemorating International Dance Day.
