Lynx Editions LogoLynx Editions

Lynx Edicions is a publishing house dedicated to publishing ornithology and nature books. He is recognized for the 17-volume encyclopedia Handbook of the Birds of the World, which was the first work to describe and illustrate all of the world's bird species, as well as for the encyclopedia of 9 volumes Handbook of the Mammals of the World (Manual of the mammals of the world). Lynx publishes a wide range of nature titles, including encyclopedias, checklists, field guides and monographs.

In 2013, once the collection was completed, HBW Alive, the online version of the Handbook of the Birds of the World, was created with the addition of numerous additional resources and continuous updating. In 2020, HBW Alive content was added to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Birds of the World online project, where it continues to grow and serve the ornithological and birdwatching communities.

In addition to these important projects, Lynx is continuously working on expanding its selection of ornithology and natural history titles, including field guides, nature guides, monographs and illustrated checklists. One such growing project is the Lynx and BirdLife International Field Guide Collection, a collection with the main aim of producing modern and standardized identification guides, especially for countries lacking a recent or national-level guide. Also, for mammals, there is a growing number of titles in the Lynx Illustrated Checklists collection, covering all mammal species in each region.

The Lynx label remains committed to these projects because they represent a key instrument for the 'emergence' and education of professionals and enthusiasts, including researchers, guides and bird/mammal watchers in any country, which, in its in turn, it has important repercussions on the conservation of nature and biodiversity, both locally and globally.

He was one of the young people who in 1978 demonstrated for the conservation of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà against urban speculation.

In 1982, he participated in the creation of the Mosquito Control Service of the Gulf of Roses and Baix Ter and directed it until October 1985.

He was director of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park between 1984 and 1998. He directed the Territory and Landscape Foundation, of the Caixa Catalunya Social Work between 1998 and 2009. The fundamental objectives he had were to collaborate in the conservation of natural heritage and the landscape, and raising awareness among all levels of the population about environmental values.

He was also co-founder of Lynx Edicions in 1989 together with Josep del Hoyo and Ramon Mascort.

Josep del Hoyo Calduch

Josep del Hoyo Calduch (Barcelona, 1954) is a doctor, ornithologist, publisher and publicist.

In 1989, he founded the publishing house Lynx Edicions together with Ramon Mascort and Jordi Sargatal, especially for the Handbook of the Birds of the World project, an encyclopedia that has illustrated and treated in detail for the first time all the species of birds of the world The original idea for the project arose after del Hoyo took a 13-month trip through several African countries, and saw that there was no global work that showed all the species.

Once the publication of the encyclopedia was completed, it became a digital project, Handbook of the Birds of the World-Alive, which was eventually acquired by Cornell University, forming today part of its Birds of the World platform.

They also edited the encyclopedia Handbook of the Mammals of the World, in the same spirit as the work on birds, becoming the first work to illustrate all the species of mammals on the planet.

The collection of the Lynx publishing house, devoted mainly to bird books, is located in the Science and Technology Library.
