Call for Serra Hunter Senior UAB 2024 Plan

The aim of the Senior Serra Hunter Plan is to hire distinguished Serra Hunter lecturers to cover teaching, research, and knowledge transfer needs as well as the high level leadership needs that universities may have. These distinguished lecturers will have a teaching load of 120 hours per year.

Lecturers selected through this Senior Serra Hunter Plan must come from academic institutions from outside the country and must demonstrate academic leadership skills and will be hired as distinguished lecturers as set out in current legislation.

 

  • A. THE UAB IS NOW OPENING A PERIOD UNTIL 10TH SEPTEMBER 2024 FOR A DEMONSTRATION OF INTEREST FROM CANDIDATES WHO MATCH ONE OF THE FOLLOWING THREE PROFILES:
  1. Mathematical statistics applied to artificial intelligence, mainly in the areas of fairness, causality, inference and interpretability of AI-based models

    1.1. Distinguished Professor in the Field of Statistical Mathematics
    A distinguished professor in the field of statistical mathematics with a research and knowledge transfer track record that is widely recognized at the international level. Renowned for significant contributions to the development of mathematical properties in Artificial Intelligence (AI), encompassing a broad range of aspects fundamental to the development, application, and validation of models and algorithms.

    1.2. Teaching Requirements:
    - Teach advanced courses in Data Science, covering both theoretical foundations and practical applications.
    - Develop and implement innovative curricula that inspire and train the next generation of data scientists and AI experts.
    - Incorporate expertise in the mathematical foundations for AI.
    - Mentor and support undergraduate and graduate students in their research projects and theses.

    1.3. Research Requirements:
    - Lead cutting-edge research projects in Artificial Intelligence, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
    - Ensure the publication of results in high-impact scientific journals.
    - Actively participate in industrial European projects, establishing collaborations with industry and other academic institutions.

    1.4. Knowledge Transfer Requirements:
    - Promote and facilitate knowledge transfer in the fields of data science and applied mathematics.
    - Collaborate with industry and other academic institutions in research and development projects.
    - Create continuous training programs for industry professionals.
    - Identify and develop potential for patents arising from research activities.  
     
    1.5. High-Level Leadership Requirements:
    - Actively contribute to the administrative and governance activities of the university.
    - Participate in committees and the strategic planning of the institution.
    - Demonstrate communication and leadership skills, fostering an inclusive and collaborative work environment.
    - Develop and maintain collaborative networks with other academic institutions and industry partners.

    1.6. Proposal candidate Requirements:
    - Demonstrated experience in teaching at the university level.
    - A solid track record of publications in high-impact scientific journals and participation in international conferences.
    - Experience in collaborative projects with industry and other academic institutions, especially in industrial European projects.
    - Expertise in mathematical and statistical properties for AI development, such as fairness and robustness.
    - Communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work in teams and foster an inclusive and collaborative learning environment . 

  2. Information and Communication Engineering, mainly in development of data compression, coding theory, security, and information theory.

    2.1. Distinguished Professor in the Field of Information and Communication Engineering
    A distinguished professor in the field of information and communication engineering with a research and knowledge transfer track record that is widely recognized at the international level. Renowned for significant contributions to the development of data compression, coding theory, security, and information theory, encompassing a broad range of aspects fundamental to the developments and applications in this research area.

    2.2. Teaching Requirements:
    - Teach advanced courses in Computer Science, covering both theoretical foundations and practical applications.
    - Develop and implement innovative curricula that inspire and train the next generation of information and communication technology professionals.
    - Incorporate expertise in information processing practice.
    - Mentor and support undergraduate and graduate students in their research projects and theses.

    2.3. Research Requirements:
    - Lead cutting-edge research projects in data compression, coding theory and security, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
    - Ensure the publication of results in high-impact scientific journals.
    - Actively participate in European and international projects, establishing collaborations with industry and other academic institutions.

    2.4. Knowledge Transfer Requirements:

  3. Tropical Forest Ecology and Conservation Biology, mainly in fire ecology, ecosystem services, conservation policies.

    3.1. Distinguished Professor in Tropical Forest Ecology and Conservation Biology. 

    A distinguished professor in the field of tropical forest ecology and conservation biology with a research and knowledge transfer track record widely recognized at the international level. Significant contributions to the understanding of fire ecology, ecosystem services, conservation policies and the impacts of major disturbances such as wildfires and deforestation.

    3.2. Teaching Requirements:

    - Teach advanced courses in Spatial and Landscape Ecology, Conservation of Biodiversity, and Forest Ecology.
    - Create and execute cutting-edge educational programs that motivate and educate future ecologists and conservation biologists.
    - Incorporate expertise in ecosystem dynamics and the impacts of climatic events.
    - Guide, assist, and provide mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students in their research projects and theses.

    3.3. Research Requirements:

    - Lead interdisciplinary research on the interaction between landscapes, humans, and ecosystems, addressing land-use change, ecosystem degradation, and global change.
    - Conduct studies on species responses to environmental changes, employing new technologies and developing new frameworks and models.
    - Evaluate the effectiveness of conservation policies, proposing nature-based solutions and evidence-based management options.
    - Ensure the publication of results in high-impact scientific journals.
    - Actively participate in international collaborative projects, establishing partnerships with other academic institutions and research organizations.

    3.4. Knowledge Transfer Requirements:

    - Encourage and enable the exchange of knowledge in the fields of tropical forest ecology and conservation biology.
    - Collaborate with governmental bodies, NGOs, and international organizations in research and development projects.
    - Create continuous training programs for professionals and policymakers.
    Identify and develop potential for practical applications arising from research activities.

    3.5. High-Level Leadership Requirements:

    - Integrate scientific research into global policy frameworks, promoting evidence-based decision-making.
    - Provide strategic advisory roles in international environmental policy and participate in high-level policy dialogues.
    - Engage with regional and international platforms to advance sustainability and conservation agendas.

    3.6. Proposal Candidate Requirements:

    - Proven experience in university-level teaching, including supervision of postgraduate students and researchers.
     - A solid track record of publications in high-impact scientific journals and participation in international conferences.
    - Experience in collaborative projects with governmental bodies, NGOs, and academic institutions, particularly in the context of international initiatives.
    - Expertise in forest ecology, ecosystem services, and biodiversity conservation
    - Proven experience in the science-policy interface, including policy analysis, advisory roles, and participation in policy-making processes.
    - Strong communication and leadership abilities, capable of working effectively in teams and promoting an inclusive and collaborative learning atmosphere.

 

  • B. REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY FOR A DISTINGUISHED SERRA HUNTER LECTURESHIP AT THE UAB
  1. You must be currently undertaking your academic career outside Spain.
  2. Your academic profile must fit one of the three provided above.

 

  • C. DOCUMENTATION TO BE PROVIDED

Interested candidates must indicate which profile and position they are applying for and must attach:

  • A copy of their full CV demonstrating high level academic leadership skills in their own field.  
  • A certificate from the university where they currently work, indicating the academic position they currently hold.
  • A sworn declaration stating that if selected, they will be willing to join the UAB.

 

  • D. CONDITIONS OF THE DISTINGUISHED SERRA HUNTER LECTURESHIP CONTRACT

The distinguished lecturer contract will have a duration of 5 years.

The teaching load is 120 hours of official teaching per year.

The basic annual salary will be 65.000 euros.

After 5 years, once you have acquired the corresponding accreditation as a Full Professor or contracted Full Professor, you will be eligible to apply for a permanent CU/CC position at the UAB.
