In an imaginary map of science, mathematics could be a centrally located island connected with other sciences by means of bridges or other routes of communication. Once established, these routes allow the science in question to benefit from the deductive power of mathematics. This is conditioned to the validity of the assumptions that were adopted in going from the real world to the ideal world of mathematics. In any case, however, before using them, these routes of communication need to be built. This is precisely the work of mathematical modeling. |
