Sexualities and childhood: building knowledge

Sexualities and childhood

The SexAFIN project is one of the projects of the AFIN Research Group, based in the Anthropology Department of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, dedicated to research on families, reproduction, childhood and sexuality.
SexAFIN was born in 2017 as an action research project that aims to find out in depth what children know about sexuality, how they experience it and mean it, and how adults interpret, manage and govern sexuality during childhood.
Through participatory methodologies, it explores how children, teachers, families, and other agents involved in socialization, accompany children in their knowledge and experiences in the area of sexuality.
In accordance with the age of the children and with the participation of the management teams of the schools and family associations, the themes and research questions are agreed upon.
The results of this research contribute to the development of programs and policies for education and sexual and reproductive health.
This exhibition shows drawings created by groups of children aged between 7 and 11 from various public primary schools in the province of Barcelona, which provide data on how children think, interpret and mean sexuality.
The sample of drawings on display answers the following questions:
•    What relationship does sexuality have with our body?
•    How do ICTs relate to sexuality?
•    What are the changes in our body during puberty?
•    How are babies made?
•    What are the different ways of experiencing sexuality?
•    What are the sensations of our body?
